Medulla (hair)

The Medulla (pronunciation: /mɪˈdʌlə/) is a part of the hair structure that is found in the innermost layer.

Etymology

The term 'Medulla' is derived from the Latin word 'medulla' which means 'marrow'. It was used in this context to denote the innermost or central part of something.

Structure

The Medulla is surrounded by the cortex, which in turn is covered by the cuticle. The presence, thickness, and opacity of the medulla can vary. It is generally thicker in coarse or thick hair, and may be absent or nearly invisible in fine or thin hair.

Function

The exact function of the medulla is not well understood. However, it is believed to play a role in the transport of nutrients and waste products to and from the rapidly dividing cells in the hair bulb.
