Maxillary Sinus

The Maxillary Sinus (pronounced: măk′sĭ-lĕr′ē sī′nəs), also known as the Antrum of Highmore, is one of the four pairs of paranasal sinuses that are situated within the facial structure, specifically within the maxilla (upper jaw bone).

Etymology

The term "Maxillary" is derived from the Latin word "Maxilla" which means jawbone. "Sinus" is a Latin word that translates to "pocket" or "curve". The term "Antrum of Highmore" is named after Nathaniel Highmore, a British surgeon who first described this sinus in detail.

Anatomy

The Maxillary Sinus is pyramid-shaped and is the largest of the paranasal sinuses. It is located in the body of the maxilla, with its base towards the nasal cavity and its apex extending into the zygomatic process. The sinus is lined with a layer of mucous membrane that produces mucus to keep the nasal passages moist and trap foreign particles.
