Marshall Islands

Marshall Islands (pronunciation: /ˈmɑːrʃəl ˈaɪləndz/), officially known as the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), is an island country near the equator in the Pacific Ocean, slightly west of the International Date Line.

Etymology

The Marshall Islands were named after British explorer John Marshall, who visited them in 1788. The local name for the islands, however, is "Joļāj".
