Major Depression

Major Depression (pronounced: /ˈmeɪdʒər dɪˈprɛʃən/), also known as Clinical Depression or Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), is a common and serious mood disorder that affects how you feel, think, and handle daily activities.

Etymology

The term "depression" comes from the Latin word "deprimere", which means "to press down". The prefix "major" is used to distinguish this condition from other forms of depression, such as Dysthymia or Minor Depression.

Definition

Major Depression is characterized by a persistent feeling of sadness or a lack of interest in outside stimuli. The person suffering from this disorder may experience a significant weight loss or gain, insomnia or hypersomnia, psychomotor agitation or retardation, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, diminished ability to think or concentrate, and recurrent thoughts of death.

Related Terms

  • Mood Disorder: A psychological disorder characterized by the elevation or lowering of a person's mood.
  • Dysthymia: A chronic form of depression, but less severe than major depression.
  • Minor Depression: A mood disorder that does not meet the full criteria for major depression but is still significant and capable of causing distress.
  • Psychomotor Agitation: A series of unintentional and purposeless motions that stem from mental tension and anxiety.
  • Hypersomnia: A condition where a person has excessive sleepiness.

Treatment

Treatment for Major Depression may include psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both. It's important to note that what works for one person might not work for another, and the treatment plan should be tailored to the individual's needs.
