Macrophagic Myofasciitis (pronunciation: ma·cro·phag·ic myo·fas·ci·i·tis) is a rare medical condition characterized by specific muscle lesions in the deltoid muscle. The term is derived from the Greek words macros meaning large, phagein meaning to eat, myo referring to muscle, fascia referring to a band, and itis indicating inflammation.

Definition

Macrophagic Myofasciitis (MMF) is a condition that causes inflammation in the muscles and fascia, which are the connective tissues surrounding muscles, blood vessels, and nerves. It is characterized by the presence of macrophages, a type of white blood cell, in the muscle tissue. These macrophages contain aluminium, which is believed to be the cause of the inflammation.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Macrophagic Myofasciitis can vary greatly among individuals. Common symptoms include muscle weakness, joint pain, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties. In some cases, individuals may also experience fever, skin rashes, and lymphadenopathy (swelling of the lymph nodes).

Causes

The exact cause of Macrophagic Myofasciitis is unknown. However, it is believed to be related to the presence of aluminium in the muscle tissue. This aluminium is thought to come from vaccines that contain aluminium as an adjuvant.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Macrophagic Myofasciitis is typically made through a muscle biopsy. This involves removing a small sample of muscle tissue and examining it under a microscope. The presence of macrophages containing aluminium in the muscle tissue is indicative of the condition.

Treatment

There is currently no specific treatment for Macrophagic Myofasciitis. Treatment is typically focused on managing symptoms and may include pain management, physical therapy, and cognitive therapy.
