Lifestyle (Līf-stīl)

Lifestyle is a term used to describe the way in which a person or group lives. This includes patterns of social relations, consumption, entertainment, and dress. A lifestyle typically reflects an individual's attitudes, values, or worldview.

Etymology

The term 'lifestyle' was first used by Austrian psychologist Alfred Adler in 1929. The term was introduced in the 20th century and was a derivative of 'style of life' which was originally used by Alfred Adler.

Definition

A lifestyle is a means of forging a sense of self and to create cultural symbols that resonate with personal identity. Not all aspects of a lifestyle are voluntary. Surrounding social and technical systems can constrain the lifestyle choices available to the individual and the symbols she/he is able to project to others and the self.
