Levocabastine
Levocabastine
Levocabastine (pronounced: leh-voe-KAB-uh-steen) is a selective second-generation H1-antihistamine that is used primarily for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis. It is marketed under various trade names, including Livostin, Tavist Allergy, and Vistazine.
Etymology
The term "Levocabastine" is derived from its chemical structure. The prefix "Levo-" refers to the levorotatory isomer of the compound, while "cabastine" is a combination of parts of the words "carboxylic acid" and "antihistamine", referring to the compound's function and its carboxylic acid group.
Usage
Levocabastine is used to alleviate the symptoms of allergic reactions, such as itching, redness, and swelling, by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. It is commonly used in the form of eye drops or nasal spray.
