Leptomeninges

Leptomeninges (pronunciation: lep-toh-men-in-jeez) is a term used in the field of neuroanatomy to refer to the two innermost layers of the meninges, the pia mater and the arachnoid mater.

Etymology

The term "leptomeninges" is derived from the Greek words "lepto", meaning thin, and "meninx", meaning membrane. This is in reference to the thin, delicate nature of these two layers of the meninges.

Anatomy

The leptomeninges envelop the entire central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. They play a crucial role in protecting these vital structures from injury and providing them with nutrients.

The pia mater is the innermost layer of the leptomeninges, adhering closely to the surface of the brain and spinal cord. It follows the contours of these structures, dipping into the sulci and fissures.

The arachnoid mater is the middle layer of the meninges, lying between the pia mater and the outermost layer, the dura mater. It is separated from the pia mater by the subarachnoid space, which is filled with cerebrospinal fluid.
