Lablab

Lablab (pronounced: /ˈlæblæb/), also known as Hyacinth Bean or Dolichos Bean, is a species of bean in the family Fabaceae. It is native to Africa and it is cultivated throughout the tropics for food.

Etymology

The term "Lablab" is derived from the Arabic word "lublub" which was used to describe the plant. The scientific name for Lablab is Lablab purpureus. The species name "purpureus" is Latin for "purple", referring to the color of the plant's flowers.

Description

Lablab is a fast-growing, perennial plant that can reach up to 3 meters in height. It has a deep root system which makes it resistant to drought. The leaves are trifoliate, meaning they are divided into three leaflets. The flowers are typically purple, although there are varieties with white or pink flowers. The pods are flat and elongated, containing several seeds.

Uses

Lablab is a versatile plant with many uses. The young pods and seeds are used as a vegetable, either boiled or roasted. The mature seeds are also used as a pulse. In addition to its use as food, Lablab is also used as a cover crop, green manure, and forage for livestock.
