Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan (pronunciation: /ˌkɪərɡɪˈstɑːn/), officially known as the Kyrgyz Republic, is a landlocked country located in Central Asia.

Etymology

The name "Kyrgyz" is believed to have been derived from the Turkic word for "forty", in reference to the forty clans of Manas, a legendary hero who united forty regional clans against the Uyghurs. The "-stan" is a Persian suffix meaning "land".

Geography

Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the southwest, and China to the east. Its capital and largest city is Bishkek. Kyrgyzstan's terrain is mountainous, which leads to the country being occasionally referred to as "the Switzerland of Central Asia".

History

Kyrgyzstan has a rich history that includes a variety of cultures and empires, including the Persian Empire, Mongol Empire, and the Russian Empire. In 1991, Kyrgyzstan declared independence from the Soviet Union, becoming a sovereign state.
