King Edward Medical University

King Edward Medical University (pronounced: King Ed-ward Med-i-cal Uni-ver-si-ty), often abbreviated as KEMU, is a prestigious medical university located in Lahore, Pakistan. The university was established in 1860 and is named after King Edward VII of the United Kingdom.

Etymology

The university is named after King Edward VII who was the King of the United Kingdom from 1901 to 1910. The name reflects the colonial history of Pakistan and the influence of the British Empire on the country's education system.

History

King Edward Medical University was established in 1860 as the Lahore Medical School. It is the fourth oldest medical school in South Asia, after Medical College Kolkata (January 28, 1835), Madras Medical College, Chennai (February 2, 1835) and Grant Medical College, Bombay (1845). In 1911, the college became affiliated with the University of the Punjab while maintaining its autonomy.

In 2005, the college was upgraded to a university and was renamed King Edward Medical University.

Courses

King Edward Medical University offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in various fields of medicine and surgery. These include MBBS, BDS, PharmD, MD, MS, MPhil, and PhD programs.

Affiliated Hospitals

The university is affiliated with several hospitals, including the Mayo Hospital, Lady Willingdon Hospital, Lahore General Hospital, and Ganga Ram Hospital.

Notable Alumni

Many notable medical professionals have graduated from King Edward Medical University. These include Abdus Salam, the first Pakistani to receive a Nobel Prize in sciences, and Atta-ur-Rahman, a leading scientist in organic chemistry.
