Keratectomy

Keratectomy (pronounced: ker-uh-tek-tuh-mee) is a surgical procedure involving the removal of part of the cornea. The term is derived from the Greek words "kerato," meaning cornea, and "ectomy," meaning removal.

History

The first keratectomy was performed in the late 19th century. Since then, it has evolved into several different types, including Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) and Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK).

Procedure

During a keratectomy, a surgeon uses a specialized tool to remove a layer of the cornea. This can help to reshape the cornea and improve vision. The procedure is often performed to correct refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.

Risks and Complications

Like all surgical procedures, keratectomy carries some risks. These can include infection, scarring, and changes in vision. It's important for patients to discuss these risks with their ophthalmologist before undergoing the procedure.
