Juglans cinerea

Juglans cinerea, commonly known as the butternut or white walnut, is a species of walnut native to the eastern United States and southeast Canada. Its natural range extends from New Brunswick to Georgia, west to Minnesota and Oklahoma.

Pronunciation

Juglans cinerea: /ˈdʒʌɡlənz sɪˈnɛriə/

Etymology

The genus name Juglans derives from Jupiter glans, "Jupiter's acorn" in Latin. The species epithet cinerea is from Latin cinereus, meaning "ash-colored" or "grey," which refers to the color of the tree's bark.

Description

The Juglans cinerea is a deciduous tree growing to 20 m (66 ft) tall, rarely 30 m (98 ft). It has a crown of leaves at the top, and the bark is grayish to light brown, with deep vertical grooves and ridges. The leaves are pinnate, with 11-17 leaflets, each leaflet 5–10 cm long and 2–3 cm broad. The whole leaf is downy-pubescent, and a somewhat brighter, yellower green than many other tree leaves.

Related Terms

  • Juglandaceae: The walnut family of trees, shrubs, and vines in which Juglans cinerea belongs.
  • Deciduous: Trees or shrubs that shed their leaves annually.
  • Pinnate: A term used to describe a leaf that has leaflets arranged on either side of the stem, typically in pairs opposite each other.
  • Leaflet: A small leaf-like part of a compound leaf.

Uses

The nuts of the Juglans cinerea are edible and were used by Native Americans for food and oil. The wood is light in weight and takes polish well, and is highly rot resistant, making it desirable for furniture, interior finish, and carving.

Conservation Status

The Juglans cinerea is listed as a species of special concern and believed extirpated in some regions due to the butternut canker, a fungal disease.
