Jewellery (or jewelry in American English; pronunciation: /ˈdʒuːəlri/) refers to decorative items worn for personal adornment, such as brooches, rings, necklaces, earrings, pendants, bracelets, and cufflinks. Jewellery may be attached to the body or the clothes.

Etymology

The word "jewellery" comes from jewel, from the old French "jouel", which in turn comes from the latin "jocale", which means 'plaything'.

Types of Jewellery

  • Ring - A circular band, typically of gold or silver, worn on the finger.
  • Necklace - A piece of jewellery that is worn around the neck.
  • Earring - A piece of jewellery that is worn on the ear.
  • Bracelet - A piece of jewellery that is worn around the wrist.
  • Brooch - A decorative pin that is worn on clothes.
  • Pendant - A hanging piece of jewellery, generally attached to a necklace or a bracelet.
