Jean Nidetch (pronounced: Jean Nee-detch) was an American entrepreneur who is best known as the co-founder of the international weight loss and wellness organization, Weight Watchers.

Early Life

Jean Evelyn Slutsky was born on October 12, 1923, in Brooklyn, New York, to parents David and Mae Slutsky. She grew up in a low-income family during the Great Depression, which influenced her relationship with food and weight from a young age.

Career

In 1961, Nidetch began a weight loss group with friends in her Queens, New York apartment after becoming frustrated with her own weight loss journey. This group eventually evolved into Weight Watchers, which was officially founded in 1963. Nidetch's approach to weight loss, which emphasized community support and shared experiences, was revolutionary at the time and continues to be a cornerstone of the Weight Watchers program.

Personal Life

Nidetch married Marty Nidetch in 1947, and they had two children together. She passed away on April 29, 2015, in Parkland, Florida.
