Internship

Internship (/ɪnˈtəːnʃɪp/), derived from the Latin internus meaning "internal", is a period of work experience offered by an organization for a limited period of time. They are typically undertaken by students and graduates looking to gain relevant skills and experience in a particular field.

History

The concept of an internship has evolved from medieval apprenticeship, where a skilled labourer, often a craftsman, would take on and teach a young person their trade. In exchange for being taught a trade, the apprentice would agree to work for the craftsman for a specified period of time.

Types of Internships

Internships can be classified into different types based on various factors such as duration, pay, and sector. Some common types include:

  • Cooperative Education: This type of internship involves a partnership between the student, the educational institution, and the employer. The student alternates between periods of formal education at the institution and work experience in the employer's organization.
  • Externship: An externship is similar to an internship but is typically shorter in duration and provides less in-depth experience.
  • Clinical Internship: This type of internship is common in healthcare professions. It involves the intern working under the supervision of a licensed professional in a clinical setting.
  • Research Internship: In a research internship, the intern works on a specific research project under the guidance of a professional in the field.

Benefits of Internships

Internships provide several benefits to both the intern and the organization. For the intern, it provides practical experience, enhances their resume, and helps in building a professional network. For the organization, it helps in identifying potential future employees and contributes to the organization's work.

Criticisms of Internships

Despite the benefits, internships have also been criticized for various reasons. Some common criticisms include exploitation of interns, lack of pay or low pay, and lack of quality experience.
