Internet addiction (pronounced /ˈɪntərnɛt əˈdɪkʃən/), also known as web addiction or net addiction, is a type of behavioral addiction characterized by excessive or poorly controlled preoccupations, urges, or behaviors regarding computer use and internet access that lead to impairment or distress.

Etymology

The term "Internet addiction" was coined by Dr. Ivan Goldberg in 1995 for pathological compulsive internet use. The word "addiction" is derived from a Latin term for "enslaved by" or "bound to."

Definition

Internet addiction is often divided into subtypes by activity, such as gaming, online social networking, online gambling, cybersex, online shopping, or information overload.

Symptoms

Symptoms of internet addiction may include: diminished interest in other activities, neglect of personal hygiene, changes in sleep patterns, changes in eating habits, and withdrawal symptoms when not using the internet.

Treatment

Treatment for internet addiction includes cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy, and medication.
