International Emergency Medicine

International emergency medicine (in-ter-na-tion-al e-mer-gen-cy med-i-cine, from Latin inter meaning "between", natio meaning "nation", emergere meaning "to rise out" and medicina meaning "the healing art") is a medical specialty that focuses on the delivery and development of emergency care in international settings, including both high and low-resource environments.

International emergency medicine encompasses a wide range of activities, including humanitarian aid, disaster response, development of emergency care systems, and academic research. It is a rapidly growing field within the broader discipline of emergency medicine.

History

The field of international emergency medicine began to emerge in the late 20th century, as emergency physicians increasingly found themselves working in international settings. The first formal training programs in international emergency medicine were established in the 1990s.

Scope

International emergency medicine practitioners work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, field hospitals, and disaster zones. They may also be involved in policy development, training and education, and research.
