Short definitionincomplete penetrance (in-kum-PLEET PEH-neh trunks) A term used to describe when some people with a disease-causing mutation (change) in a gene develop the disease, while others do do not do. For example, certain gene mutations cause cancer, but because of incomplete penetrance, not everyone who has the mutation will develop cancer.

incomplete penetrance - (pronounced) (in-kum-PLEET PEH-neh trunks) A term used to describe when some people with a disease-causing mutation (change) in a gene develop the disease, while others do do not do. For example, certain gene mutations cause cancer, but because of incomplete penetrance, not everyone who has the mutation will develop cancer. There is currently no way of knowing which people with a cancer-causing gene mutation will develop cancer. Also called reduced penetrance
