Humid (/hjuːmɪd/; from the Latin word 'humidus' meaning 'moist') refers to the amount of water vapor present in the air. It is a key factor in the atmosphere and plays a significant role in weather and climate patterns.

Definition

Humidity is typically measured as a percentage, representing the current absolute humidity relative to the maximum for that temperature. High humidity indicates a high concentration of water vapor in the air, while low humidity indicates a low concentration.

Types of Humidity

There are three main measurements of humidity: absolute, relative and specific.

  • Absolute Humidity is the total mass of water vapor present in a given volume or mass of air.
  • Relative Humidity is the ratio of the current absolute humidity to the highest possible absolute humidity.
  • Specific Humidity is the ratio of the mass of water vapor to the total mass of the moist air parcel.

Effects on Health

High levels of humidity can have various effects on human health. It can cause dehydration, heat stroke, and other heat-related illnesses. On the other hand, low humidity can lead to dry skin, irritated sinuses, and increased susceptibility to the common cold and flu.
