Humanism

Humanism (/ˈhjuːmənɪzəm/; from Latin humanus "human") is a philosophical stance that emphasizes the value and agency of human beings, individually and collectively. The meaning of the term humanism has fluctuated according to the successive intellectual movements which have identified with it.[1]

Etymology

The term humanism is derived from the Latin humanus, meaning "human". It was first used in this sense in the 19th century by German scholars to designate the Renaissance emphasis on Classical studies, which they called Humanismus.[2]
