Human Tooth

The Human Tooth (pronunciation: /ˈhjuːmən tuːθ/) is a calcified structure found in the jaws (or mouths) of many vertebrates. The primary function of human teeth is to break down food by cutting and crushing them in preparation for swallowing and digestion.

Etymology

The term "tooth" comes from the Old English tōþ, from Proto-Germanic *tanþs, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁dónts. The plural of "tooth" is "teeth".

Anatomy of the Human Tooth

The human tooth consists of three main parts: the crown, the neck, and the root. The crown is the visible part of the tooth. The neck is the area of the tooth that is at the level of the gum line. The root is the part of the tooth that is embedded in the jawbone.

Crown

The crown is the top part of a tooth that is visible in the mouth. It is covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body.

Neck

The neck is the part of the tooth that is constricted. It is located between the crown and the root.

Root

The root is the part of the tooth that is embedded in the jawbone. It makes up about two-thirds of the tooth and holds the tooth in place.

Types of Human Teeth

Humans have four types of teeth: incisors, canines, premolars, and molars. Each type has a unique function.

Incisors

Incisors are the front teeth present in most mammals. They are primarily used for cutting food.

Canines

Canines are sharp, pointed teeth that are used for ripping and tearing food.

Premolars

Premolars, also known as bicuspids, are used for chewing and grinding food.

Molars

Molars are the largest of the teeth. They have a flat surface with multiple cusps and are used for grinding food.
