Health Indicator

A Health Indicator (pronunciation: /ˈhɛlθ ɪnˈdɪkeɪtər/) is a measure that reflects, or indicates, the state of health of persons in a defined population, i.e., a population group. They are quantifiable characteristics of a population which researchers use as a guide to assess the overall health of a place or population.

Etymology

The term "Health Indicator" is derived from the English words "health" and "indicator". "Health" comes from the Old English "hǣlth", which means "wholeness, a being whole, sound or well". The term "indicator" comes from the Latin "indicāre", which means "to point out, show, indicate".

Types of Health Indicators

Health indicators can be divided into two main types: Mortality indicators and Morbidity indicators. Mortality indicators include measures such as infant mortality rate, life expectancy, and death rate. Morbidity indicators include measures such as incidence and prevalence of diseases, and disability rates.
