Haze

Haze (/heɪz/), from the Old English hæs, is a traditionally used term in the field of meteorology to describe a phenomenon in the atmosphere that causes a decrease in visibility due to the suspension of very fine, widely dispersed, solid or liquid particles, or both.

Definition

Haze is a type of air pollution that occurs when sunlight encounters these tiny particles in the atmosphere. It is often caused by particulate matter from various sources such as dust, smoke, and other air pollutants. The particles scatter and absorb sunlight, reducing visibility and leading to the phenomenon known as haze.

Causes

Haze can be caused by a variety of factors, including wildfires, industrial pollution, and vehicle emissions. It can also be a result of weather conditions, particularly high humidity and stagnant air.

Health Effects

Exposure to haze can have various health effects, especially on the respiratory system. These can range from minor irritations such as coughing and eye irritation, to more serious conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Prevention and Control

Prevention and control of haze primarily involves reducing the sources of air pollutants. This can be achieved through various means, such as implementing stricter emission standards, promoting the use of cleaner energy sources, and improving waste management practices.

Related Terms

  • Smog: A type of air pollution that combines smoke and fog. It is similar to haze but usually associated with urban areas and industrial pollution.
  • Mist: A phenomenon similar to haze, but caused by tiny water droplets suspended in the atmosphere.
  • Fog: A cloud that touches the ground, often reducing visibility to less than 1 km.
