Grill (medical)

Grill (/ɡrɪl/), from the Old French graille, is a term used in dentistry to refer to a cosmetic dental apparatus that consists of a removable frame of precious metal, often studded with diamonds and other precious stones, worn over the front teeth.

Etymology

The term grill in this context is derived from the Old French graille, meaning "grating" or "grille". It was first used in the 18th century to describe a type of dental prosthesis made of gold or silver wire that was used to hold false teeth in place. The modern usage of the term to refer to a cosmetic dental apparatus came into use in the late 20th century, particularly in the hip-hop culture of the United States.
