Grappling

Grappling (/ˈɡræp(ə)lɪŋ/) is a close fighting technique used to gain a physical advantage such as improving relative position, or causing injury to the opponent. Grappling covers techniques used in many disciplines, styles and martial arts that are practiced both as combat sports and for self-defense. Grappling most commonly does not include striking or the use of weapons.

Etymology

The term "grappling" comes from the Old English græppian, meaning "to seize or grasp", and it has been used in the context of hand-to-hand combat since the early 15th century.
