Goal setting (/ɡoʊl ˈsɛtɪŋ/) is the process of identifying something that you want to achieve, and then developing a plan to work towards achieving it.

Etymology

The term "goal setting" is derived from the words "goal" and "setting". The word "goal" comes from the Old English "gol" meaning "boundary" or "limit". The word "setting" comes from the Old English "settan" meaning "to place" or "put". Together, they form "goal setting", which refers to the act of defining a target or objective.

In the context of personal development, goal setting involves establishing specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives. Goals can be long-term, intermediate, or short-term. The primary difference is the time required to achieve them.
