George Washington

George Washington (pronunciation: /ˈdʒɔːrdʒ ˈwɒʃɪŋtən/) was the first President of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797. He was also one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, a group of American leaders who united the Thirteen Colonies, led the war for independence from Great Britain, and built a Frame of Government for the new United States of America.

Etymology

The name "George" is of Greek origin, derived from the word "georgos" which means "farmer, earthworker". The surname "Washington" is of English origin and is a location name referring to a town called "Washington" in England. The name was first given to someone who lived in or was from this town.
