Genital Warts

Genital Warts (pronunciation: /ˈjenɪtl wɔːrts/), also known as Condyloma Acuminatum or Venereal Warts, are a type of sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by certain strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

Etymology

The term "Genital Warts" is derived from the Latin words "genitalis" meaning "of the genitals" and "verruca" meaning "wart". The term "Condyloma Acuminatum" is derived from the Greek words "kondyloma" meaning "knob" and "akuminatum" meaning "pointed".

Definition

Genital Warts are small, fleshy growths that appear on or around the genital or anal area. They are the result of a viral skin infection caused by the HPV. The warts are usually painless and do not pose a serious threat to health, but they can cause psychological distress and can occasionally cause discomfort or bleeding.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Genital Warts may include:

  • Small, flesh-colored or gray swellings in your genital area
  • Several warts close together that take on a cauliflower shape
  • Itching or discomfort in your genital area
  • Bleeding with intercourse

Causes

Genital Warts are caused by the HPV. There are more than 100 types of HPV, but types 6 and 11 are the strains most commonly associated with Genital Warts.

Treatment

Treatment for Genital Warts includes topical medications, cryotherapy (freezing the warts), electrocautery (burning the warts), or surgical removal. It's important to note that while treatments can remove the warts, they do not eliminate the HPV, so warts can recur.

Prevention

Prevention methods include using condoms, getting vaccinated against HPV, and regular screenings for sexually active individuals.
