G0 phase

G0 phase (pronounced "G zero phase") is a phase in the cell cycle in which cells exist in a quiescent (inactive) state. G0 phase is often referred to as a resting phase, but this does not mean that the cell is not active, it is just not actively preparing to divide.

Etymology

The term "G0 phase" is derived from the term "Gap 0", referring to the gap in the cell cycle where no active preparation for cell division is taking place.

Description

In the G0 phase, cells are metabolically active but do not proliferate unless called upon to do so. Cells may remain in G0 for a long time, and some cells, such as mature neurons and cardiac muscle cells, never leave the G0 phase and are considered to be in a state of permanent cell cycle arrest.
