Fluorescent

Fluorescent (/flʊəˈrɛs(ə)nt/) is a term that refers to the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. It is a form of luminescence.

Etymology

The term "fluorescent" is derived from the mineral fluorite, which in turn was named after the Latin verb "fluere", meaning "to flow". Fluorite was so named because it melts easily. The phenomenon of fluorescence was first observed in fluorite and was named after the mineral.
