Fluid Balance

Fluid balance (pronounced: /ˈfluːɪd ˈbæləns/) is a critical aspect of the human body's homeostasis. It refers to the balance of input and output of fluids in the body to maintain the body's water content at a constant level.

Etymology

The term "fluid balance" is derived from the Latin words "fluidus" meaning flowing, and "bilanx" meaning two-scaled balance.

Definition

Fluid balance is the concept of human homeostasis that the amount of fluid removed from the body is equal to the amount of fluid taken in. The body is in fluid balance when the amount of fluid ingested equals the amount of fluid excreted. The body's fluid balance is controlled primarily by the kidneys.

Importance

Fluid balance is crucial for the body's overall function. It plays a significant role in maintaining blood volume, blood pressure, and cellular function. An imbalance in fluid levels can lead to conditions such as dehydration or overhydration, both of which can have serious health consequences.

Related Terms

  • Dehydration: A condition that occurs when the loss of body fluids, mostly water, exceeds the amount that is taken in.
  • Overhydration: A condition characterized by an excess of body water.
  • Homeostasis: The ability of the body or a cell to seek and maintain a condition of equilibrium or stability within its internal environment when dealing with external changes.
  • Kidneys: A pair of organs in the body that filter blood, remove waste products and excess fluid in the form of urine.
  • Blood volume: The total amount of blood circulating within the body.
  • Blood pressure: The pressure of circulating blood against the walls of blood vessels.
