Flood

Flood (/flʌd/), from the Old English flōd, a word common to Germanic languages[1], is a natural disaster characterized by an overflow of water that submerges land which is usually dry[2].

Causes

Floods can be caused by several factors including heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt, sea-level rise, or dam failure. These factors can often combine, exacerbating the impact of the flood[3].

Effects

The effects of floods can be devastating, leading to loss of life, damage to buildings and infrastructure, and economic harm. Floods can also lead to the spread of waterborne diseases and have significant impacts on the environment[4].

Prevention and Mitigation

Prevention and mitigation strategies for floods include the construction of levees, dams, and floodplains, as well as the implementation of early warning systems and community education[5].
