Filoviridae

Filoviridae (pronounced: /ˌfaɪloʊˈvɪrɪdiː/) is a family of viruses that are known to cause severe hemorrhagic fevers in humans and non-human primates. The family includes the genera Ebolavirus, Marburgvirus, and Cuevavirus.

Etymology

The name Filoviridae is derived from the Latin filum, meaning "thread" or "filament". This is in reference to the unique filamentous structure of the viruses in this family.

Genera

The Filoviridae family is divided into three genera:

  • Ebolavirus: This genus includes five species, one of which is the Zaire ebolavirus, the most dangerous of the known ebolavirus species. The name "Ebolavirus" is derived from the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the virus was first identified.
  • Marburgvirus: This genus includes one species, Marburg virus, which causes Marburg virus disease, a severe and often fatal disease in humans. The virus is named after Marburg, the city in Germany where it was first identified.
  • Cuevavirus: This genus includes one species, Lloviu cuevavirus, which has been found in bats in Spain. The name "Cuevavirus" is derived from the Spanish word cueva, meaning "cave", in reference to the location where the virus was first identified.

Related Terms

  • Hemorrhagic fever: A group of illnesses that are caused by several distinct families of viruses, including Filoviridae. Hemorrhagic fevers can cause a range of symptoms from mild illness to severe and life-threatening disease.
  • Zoonotic disease: A disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Filoviridae viruses are considered zoonotic as they are believed to be transmitted to humans from wild animals, particularly fruit bats.
  • Viral replication: The process by which a virus makes copies of itself within a host cell. Filoviridae viruses replicate in a similar manner to other RNA viruses.
