Ferrous

Ferrous (/ˈfɛrəs/), from the Latin ferrum, is a term often used in medicine to refer to compounds containing iron in a +2 oxidation state, also known as iron(II) or Fe2+.

Etymology

The term ferrous is derived from the Latin word ferrum, meaning iron. It is used in the naming of various iron compounds to indicate the presence of iron in the +2 oxidation state.

Medical Usage

In medicine, ferrous compounds are often used in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia. This condition occurs when the body lacks enough iron to produce sufficient red blood cells. Ferrous sulfate, ferrous gluconate, and ferrous fumarate are among the most commonly prescribed iron supplements for this condition.

Ferrous compounds are also used in the production of contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These agents enhance the visibility of internal body structures in MRI scans.
