Ethinylestradiol Sulfonate

Ethinylestradiol sulfonate (pronunciation: eth-in-ill-es-tra-die-ol sul-fo-nate) is a synthetic, steroidal estrogen that is used in hormone replacement therapy and as a component of hormonal contraception.

Etymology

The term "Ethinylestradiol" is derived from the words "ethynyl", a functional group in organic chemistry, and "estradiol", a naturally occurring estrogen. The "sulfonate" part of the name refers to the sulfonate functional group that is added to the ethinylestradiol molecule to improve its water solubility and prolong its duration of action.

Usage

Ethinylestradiol sulfonate is primarily used in the treatment of menopausal symptoms and in contraceptive pills. It is often combined with a progestogen to prevent endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer.

Pharmacology

Ethinylestradiol sulfonate is a long-acting estrogen. It works by binding to and activating the estrogen receptor, which in turn regulates the expression of many genes in cells.
