An essay (/ˈɛseɪ/; from French essai, attempt or trial) is a short piece of writing on a particular subject.

Etymology

The term "essay" comes from the French word essai, which means "attempt" or "trial". It was first coined by the French philosopher Michel de Montaigne in the 16th century to describe his attempts at self-portrayal in prose.

Definition

An essay is a "short literary composition on a particular theme or subject, usually in prose and generally analytic, speculative, or interpretative." The writer of an essay is called an essayist.

Types of Essays

There are several types of essays, including:

  • Descriptive essay: This type of essay describes a person, place, event, or thing in detail.
  • Narrative essay: A narrative essay tells a story from a certain point of view.
