Erythema Nodosum

Erythema nodosum (pronunciation: /ɪˌrɪθɪmə nəʊˈdoʊsəm/) is a type of skin condition that causes red, painful lumps, usually in the front part of the legs below the knees.

Etymology

The term "erythema nodosum" originates from the Greek words "erythros" meaning red, and "nodosum" from the Latin "nodus" meaning knot, referring to the characteristic red nodules seen in this condition.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of erythema nodosum is the appearance of tender, red nodules or lumps that are usually seen on the shins. These lumps may be accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, joint pain, and general discomfort or fatigue.

Causes

Erythema nodosum can be caused by a variety of conditions including infections, such as streptococcal infections, and certain medications. It can also be associated with systemic diseases like sarcoidosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and Behçet's disease.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of erythema nodosum is typically based on the characteristic appearance of the skin lesions. Additional tests may be performed to identify any underlying conditions that may be causing the erythema nodosum.

Treatment

Treatment for erythema nodosum primarily involves managing the underlying condition that is causing it. This may involve antibiotics for infections or changes in medication if a certain drug is the cause. Pain and inflammation can be managed with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Related Terms

  • Dermatology: The branch of medicine dealing with the skin and its diseases.
  • Inflammation: A response of body tissues to injury or irritation.
