The term is derived from the Greek words "enkyklios paideia" (ἐγκύκλιος παιδεία), meaning "general education".

The word "encyclopaedia" comes from the Greek words "enkyklios" (ἐγκύκλιος), meaning "circular, recurrent, required regularly, general" and "paideia" (παιδεία), meaning "education, rearing of a child". Together, they refer to the general education that a person is expected to have.
