Egg Donation

Egg donation is a process where an egg, or oocyte, is removed from a female donor and donated to another woman to assist in the process of reproduction. This is often used in assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

Pronunciation

Egg Donation: /ɛɡ doʊˈneɪʃən/

Etymology

The term "egg donation" is derived from the English words "egg" (from Old Norse 'egg'), referring to the female reproductive cell, and "donation" (from Latin 'donatio'), meaning the act of giving.

Process

The process of egg donation involves several steps. The donor undergoes hormonal stimulation to encourage the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. These eggs are then retrieved in a minor surgical procedure. The retrieved eggs are then fertilized in a laboratory setting, typically through a process known as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). The resulting embryos are then transferred to the recipient's uterus.
