Droplet Transmission

Droplet transmission (/ˈdrɒplɪt trænsˈmɪʃən/), from the Latin droplet meaning "small drop" and transmissio meaning "sending across", is a mode of transmission of an infectious disease.

Droplet transmission occurs when bacteria or viruses travel on relatively large respiratory droplets that people sneeze, cough, drip, or exhale. They travel only short distances before settling on nearby surfaces. This is in contrast to airborne transmission, where microorganisms can be transported over longer distances and remain infectious over time.

Types of Diseases

Diseases that are commonly spread through droplet transmission include influenza, whooping cough, and COVID-19.

Prevention

Prevention of droplet transmission can be achieved through a variety of methods. These include hand hygiene, wearing face masks, and maintaining physical distance from infected individuals.
