Divorce is the legal dissolution of a marriage by a court or other competent body.

Etymology

The term "divorce" comes from the Latin word divortium which means "separation" or "divorce". It is derived from divertere, which means "to turn different ways".

Definition

Divorce is the termination of a marriage or marital union, the cancelling and/or reorganizing of the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage, thus dissolving the bonds of matrimony between a married couple under the rule of law of the particular country and/or state.
