Dimple

Dimple (pronunciation: /ˈdɪmpəl/) is a small natural indentation in the flesh on a part of the human body, especially in the cheek or on the chin.

Etymology

The term "dimple" is derived from the Old English word dyppan, meaning "to dip". It is believed to have originated from the notion of a small dip or indentation on the surface of the body.

Description

A dimple is a visible indentation anywhere on the skin, but the term is most commonly used to refer to indentations on the cheeks, which can be present permanently or appear while smiling. Dimples can also occur on the chin and lower back. They are generally considered an attractive feature in many cultures.

Genetics

Dimples are a genetic trait that are caused by variations in the structure of the facial muscle known as the zygomaticus major. They can be present on one or both sides of the face, and are not always symmetrical.
