Dihydrotachysterol

Dihydrotachysterol (pronunciation: dye-hydro-tack-iss-ter-ol) is a synthetic form of vitamin D, used as a medication in the treatment of certain conditions such as rickets, hypoparathyroidism, and hypocalcemia related to renal disease.

Etymology

The term "Dihydrotachysterol" is derived from the Greek words "di" meaning two, "hydro" meaning water, "tachys" meaning fast, and "sterol" which is a type of lipid. This refers to the two hydrogen atoms added to the tachysterol molecule to create this synthetic form of vitamin D.

Usage

Dihydrotachysterol is used as a medication to treat conditions that result from a lack of vitamin D in the body. These conditions include rickets, a disease that affects bone development in children; hypoparathyroidism, a condition where the body produces insufficient parathyroid hormone; and hypocalcemia related to renal disease, a condition where the body has low levels of calcium due to kidney disease.
