Dean Ornish

Dean Ornish (pronounced /ˈdɪn ˈɔːrnɪʃ/) is an American physician and researcher. He is the president and founder of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California, as well as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

Etymology

The name "Dean" is of Old English origin, meaning "valley". The surname "Ornish" is of unknown origin.

Biography

Dean Ornish was born on July 16, 1953, in Dallas, Texas. He received his MD from the Baylor College of Medicine, completed a medical internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and earned a BA in Humanities summa cum laude from the University of Texas at Austin.

Work

Ornish is known for his lifestyle-driven approach to the control of coronary artery disease (CAD) and other chronic diseases. He promotes lifestyle changes including a quasi-vegetarian diet, a regimen of regular physical activity, stress management techniques such as yoga and meditation, and social support.

Dean Ornish Diet

The Dean Ornish Diet is a low-fat, high-fiber, vegetarian diet that is part of Ornish's "Program for Reversing Heart Disease". It is based on the principle that certain foods are health-promoting while others are disease-promoting.
