Cresol

Cresol (pronounced: /ˈkrɛsɒl/), also known as methylphenol, is a type of phenol that has a methyl group. It is an organic compound that is widely used in the production of disinfectants and resins.

Etymology

The term "cresol" is derived from the Latin word crescum, meaning "to grow", and the Greek word oleum, meaning "oil". This is in reference to the compound's oily nature and its use in promoting the growth of certain types of bacteria.

Types of Cresol

There are three types of cresol: ortho-cresol (o-cresol), meta-cresol (m-cresol), and para-cresol (p-cresol). Each type differs in the position of the methyl group on the phenol ring.

  • Ortho-cresol: This type of cresol has the methyl group in the adjacent position to the hydroxyl group on the phenol ring.
  • Meta-cresol: In meta-cresol, the methyl group is in the third position from the hydroxyl group.
  • Para-cresol: The methyl group is in the opposite position to the hydroxyl group in para-cresol.

Uses

Cresols are used in the production of disinfectants, resins, and solvents. They are also used in the manufacture of plastics and pesticides.

Health Effects

Exposure to cresols can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Ingestion or inhalation of high levels can lead to symptoms such as headache, dizziness, and unconsciousness.

Related Terms

  • Phenol: A type of aromatic organic compound from which cresols are derived.
  • Methyl group: A functional group derived from methane, present in all types of cresols.
  • Disinfectants: Chemical agents used to destroy or inhibit the growth of harmful microorganisms.
  • Resins: Solid or highly viscous substances of plant or synthetic origin that are typically convertible into polymers.
