Cover test

The Cover test or Cover-Uncover test is a medical examination used by healthcare professionals to determine the presence of strabismus or more commonly known as squint.

Pronunciation

Cover test: /ˈkʌvər tɛst/

Etymology

The term "Cover test" is derived from the English words "cover", meaning to place something upon or over, so as to protect or conceal, and "test", meaning a procedure intended to establish the quality, performance, or reliability of something, especially before it is taken into widespread use.

Procedure

The Cover test involves the patient focusing on a small object at a distance. The examiner then covers one of the patient's eyes. If the other eye moves to focus on the object, this indicates that the covered eye was initially misaligned. The test is then repeated on the other eye.
