Counselling

Counselling (pronounced /ˈkaʊnsəlɪŋ/), also known as therapy or psychotherapy, is a type of mental health support that involves a trained professional working with an individual, couple, family, or group to help them manage or overcome personal, social, or psychological challenges.

Etymology

The term "counselling" originates from the Old French counsel, meaning "advice, counsel", which is derived from the Latin consilium, meaning "plan, opinion".

Definition

Counselling is a collaborative process that involves the development of a unique, confidential helping relationship. The counsellor acts as a facilitator in helping the client to understand their feelings, behaviours, and thoughts, and to make positive changes in their life.

Types of Counselling

There are several types of counselling, including:
