Cottage Pie

Cottage pie (pronunciation: /ˈkɒtɪdʒ paɪ/) is a type of meat pie that is traditional in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The dish is typically made with beef, onion, carrot, and peas, topped with a layer of mashed potato and baked in the oven until golden brown.

Etymology

The term "cottage pie" has been in use since 1791, when the potato was being introduced as an edible crop affordable for the poor (cottage was a term used to describe a modest dwelling for rural workers). The pie was a way to use leftover roasted meat of any kind, and the pie dish was lined with mashed potato as well as having a mashed potato crust on top.

Ingredients and Preparation

The main ingredients of a cottage pie include beef, onion, carrot, peas, and mashed potato. The beef is cooked in a sauce with the onion, carrot, and peas, then placed in a dish and topped with the mashed potato. The pie is then baked in the oven until the potato topping is golden brown.

Variations

A variation of the cottage pie is the shepherd's pie, which is made with lamb instead of beef. In the United States, the dish can also be referred to as a "potato casserole" or "meat pie".
