Cosmetic

Cosmetic (/kɒzˈmɛtɪk/; from the Greek word κοσμητικὴ τέχνη, kosmētikē tekhnē, meaning "technique of dress and ornament") refers to substances or products used to enhance or alter the appearance of the body. Many cosmetics are designed for use on the face and hair.

History

The use of cosmetics dates back to ancient civilizations, with the Ancient Egyptians being one of the first known societies to use cosmetics. The term "cosmetic" itself comes from the Greek word "kosmetikos", which means "skilled in adornment or arrangement".

Types of Cosmetics

There are many different types of cosmetics, including but not limited to:

  • Foundation: A skin-colored makeup applied to the face to create an even, uniform color to the complexion.

  • Mascara: A cosmetic commonly used to enhance the eyelashes.
  • Eyeliner: A cosmetic used to define the eyes.
  • Blush: Also known as rouge, is a cosmetic for coloring the cheeks in varying shades.
  • Nail polish: A lacquer that can be applied to the human fingernail or toenails to decorate and protect the nail plates.

In many countries, cosmetics are regulated by government bodies such as the Food and Drug Administration in the United States and the European Medicines Agency in the European Union.
